ScHoolboy Q, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Pharrell all contribute bars to Cherry Bomb (in that order, though Pharrell is an influence throughout), but with respect to their individual strengths, that fact alone could lead onlookers to believe this is a fairly neat and tidy collection of songs. Veteran artists like Roy Ayers, Charlie Wilson, and Leon Ware all make cameos on Cherry Bomb, and the album is peppered with live instrumentation, including a string section on “2SEATER” that was recorded at Hans Zimmer’s studio.Īll of that means Tyler’s experimentation sometimes rubs up against the relatively predictable rest of the rap world. He’s more interested in making a great album with a bubbly, wide-ranging musicality. Unlike Earl, Tyler doesn’t seem very interested in making a great rap album. The two projects could hardly be more different. The self-produced album arrives less than a month after I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, the minimal, introverted new release from Odd Future compatriot Earl Sweatshirt. Most of all, with Cherry Bomb, his fourth full-length, he’s doing what he can to keep Odd Future from being placed into a box.
He’s 24 now, and he’s still very much a big deal - maybe bigger than ever. There was plenty of skepticism of their actual talent level and potential for longevity, but we’re now more than five years removed from Tyler’s Bastard. If you could get past the devilish vulgarity, it was easy to see a legitimate creative core inside the madness. When Tyler wants to make great music, the results can be staggering.Even if they seemed to come out of nowhere, one good look at Tyler, the Creator and the rest of hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All let you know they wouldn’t be a secret for long. Tyler's moments of flight on Cherry Bomb are sadly no more frequent than ones in which he's fallingĬherry Bomb is rarely rewarding, but there are instances where this obnoxious f**k has clearly put some thought into what he's doing He can’t let a song clock a clean three minutes he has to draw it out with meandering, joyless skits Lose yourself in the music and Cherry Bomb reveals a fevered charm. Ultimately there’s too much going on, and in what looks to be a vintage year for hip-hop, Cherry Bomb quickly scatters rather than leaving behind any indelible statement The deliberately messy mix on the Californian rapper’s new solo album gives it a grimy punk feel He's a talented but conflicted voice, still frustratingly incapable of getting it together While Cherry Bomb's low moments hold back the album's highlights, hopefully the high points are a sign of things to comeĪ noisy, rambunctious, unfettered, explosive affair, a bum-rush of energy, top-of-the-head thinking and musical prowess Fair enough, but he shouldn’t be surprised if fewer fans take him up on it this timeĪlways offensive and entertaining, Tyler remains an important force in today's hip hop, but he's still too impatient and all over the place

It’s just Tyler making the album he wants to make, and anyone who doesn’t like it is free to not listen. Is the rapper’s multilayered fourth album a bid for serious-musician status or a facetious entertainment? It’s a joy to deconstruct, either way Other songs, though, are forgettable due to their chaotic harshness and bad mixing Sometimes it makes for a completely immersive and captivating listen. He’s one of the few still committed to the Odd Future brand, like the one guy left in town after high school when everyone else has moved on He’s doing what he can to keep Odd Future from being placed into a boxĬherry Bomb isn’t exactly a hard left turn from this lane, but it is a quick swerve Tyler still spends at least half his rhymes reminding us how few fucks he gives, and his bright new sound often comes spiked with petulant noise If most of the rap records on the charts sound devoid of production ideas, it’s probably because Tyler’s stolen most of them We don't want him to stop experimenting, but to go back into the lab, where a few well-placed slugs to the machine could produce something truly special
